The Heart Is Not What You Were Taught

Most of us were taught to think of the heart as a pump — a reliable mechanical device that pushes blood around the body. That framing is not wrong, but it is incomplete in ways that matter practically.

In the 1990s, Spanish cardiac surgeon Francisco Torrent-Guasp demonstrated something that has still not made it into mainstream health conversations: the cardiac muscle is not simply a hollow ball of fibres contracting inward. It is a single, continuous muscle band folded into a double helix — a helical structure that winds around itself to produce not just a squeeze, but a wringing, rotational motion that dramatically increases the efficiency of each beat.

This is not a metaphor or a spiritual claim. It is anatomy. The heart twists slightly with each contraction — and that twist is the direct result of its helical architecture. Torrent-Guasp spent decades mapping this structure, and subsequent imaging technologies have confirmed it. The heart, at the level of its physical construction, is a spiral.

Why This Matters Beyond Anatomy

The helical structure is interesting in itself, but what it connects to is what I find practically significant.

The heart does not beat independently of the rest of the body. It is in constant, real-time dialogue with the brain, the lungs, and the autonomic nervous system. Every breath you take directly influences your heart rate — inhalation speeds it up slightly, exhalation slows it down. The variation between these speeds is called heart rate variability (HRV), and it is one of the most reliable measurable indicators of nervous system health we have.

High HRV means your nervous system is flexible and responsive — it can shift gears between activation and recovery efficiently. Low HRV is consistently associated with chronic stress, systemic inflammation, cardiovascular risk, and poor outcomes in autoimmune conditions. It is not a perfect metric, but it tells you something real about the state your body is operating in.

HRV is not a measure of how calm you are. It is a measure of how much capacity your nervous system has — how much range it can move through. Breathing is the primary lever for changing it.

The Breath-Heart Loop

The mechanism connecting breath to heart function runs through the vagus nerve. On exhalation, the vagus nerve signals the heart to slow down — this is called respiratory sinus arrhythmia, and it is a sign of a healthy, well-regulated nervous system. The slower and more complete your exhalation, the stronger this signal.

This is why extended exhale breathing practices — used across many traditions and now well-documented in clinical research — produce measurable changes in HRV within minutes. You are not relaxing through willpower or belief. You are mechanically activating a physiological pathway that shifts your body's operating state.

For people with chronic inflammatory conditions, this matters particularly. Sustained low HRV is both a consequence and a driver of systemic inflammation. The nervous system and the immune system are not separate — they are in continuous communication, and the breath sits at the intersection of both.

Spirals, Pattern Recognition, and What to Do With It

The source material for this post was originally about spirals appearing everywhere in nature — galaxies, DNA, hurricanes, the heart. That observation is real: helical and spiral forms do appear repeatedly across different scales of the physical world, from fluid dynamics to molecular biology. Whether this reflects a deep principle of nature or simply the mathematics of efficient packing and flow is an open question.

What I take from it practically is more modest: the body is not a collection of isolated parts. The heart, the lungs, the vagus nerve, the immune system — these are integrated. A change in one propagates through the others. Breathing is not a standalone wellness practice. It is direct intervention in a system where everything talks to everything else.

What This Looks Like in Practice

I work with people whose nervous systems have been running in a sustained threat state — often for years, sometimes for decades. Chronic pain, autoimmune conditions, anxiety, ADHD: the common thread is a nervous system that has lost flexibility. HRV is typically low. The breath is typically dysregulated — shallow, fast, chest-dominant, often mouth-based.
