What Epigenetics Actually Tells Us

Bruce Lipton's name comes up a lot in wellness circles, and reactions tend to be polarised. Scientists often dismiss him; the personal development world treats him like a prophet. The truth, as usual, is somewhere more useful than either extreme.

Lipton's core claim — that gene expression is influenced by the environment, including the internal environment created by chronic stress — is not fringe science. That is epigenetics, and it is well-established. What he sometimes overstates is the mechanism and the speed of change. But the underlying principle stands: your biology is not fixed, and the chronic state of your nervous system plays a measurable role in how your body functions at a cellular level.

I find this worth paying attention to — not because I want to sell you a philosophy, but because it matches what I have observed in my own body managing Ankylosing Spondylitis without constant medication since 2015, and in the people I work with.

The Stress-Cell Connection: What the Research Supports

When your nervous system is in a chronic state of threat response — whether from psychological stress, pain, or dysregulated breathing — your body releases cortisol and other stress hormones over sustained periods. This has documented downstream effects:

  • Increased systemic inflammation, which is particularly relevant in autoimmune and chronic pain conditions
  • Suppressed immune regulation, meaning the immune system becomes less precise, not stronger
  • Altered gene expression patterns associated with inflammatory pathways
  • Reduced cellular repair and recovery processes

This is not speculation. It is the basis of an entire field called psychoneuroimmunology. The connection between sustained stress states and physical illness is one of the more robust areas of health research.

What Lipton contributes — and where he is at his most practically useful — is the framing that the nervous system's state is something you can work with deliberately. You are not simply at the mercy of your genetics or your diagnosis.

Where Breathwork Fits

The breath is the fastest and most direct access point to the autonomic nervous system. It is the one automatic function you can also control consciously, which makes it a bridge between the voluntary and involuntary parts of your biology.

When breathing is chronically dysregulated — as it is for most people under sustained stress, and particularly for those with chronic pain conditions — it perpetuates the threat state. Shallow chest breathing, mouth breathing, hyperventilation: all of these signal danger to the nervous system, which responds by maintaining an inflammatory, high-alert physiology.

You cannot think your way out of a nervous system state. But you can breathe your way into a different one — and from there, the thinking changes too.

This is where Lipton's work and practical breathwork converge. Not through positive thinking as a direct cellular switch, but through the nervous system as the actual mechanism. Regulate the nervous system, and you shift the internal environment. Shift the internal environment consistently, and you influence how the body functions over time.

Voice Work and the Nervous System

One dimension of nervous system regulation that gets less attention is the role of the voice. The vagus nerve — the main pathway of the parasympathetic nervous system — is directly connected to the larynx, throat, and vocal cords. Humming, toning, and deliberate vocalisation activate vagal pathways in a way that is immediate and measurable.

This is the basis of the work I do in my Body Whisper Sessions. It is voice-based work with the nervous system — using breath and sound together to move someone out of a chronic threat state. It is particularly effective for people living with autoimmune conditions and chronic pain, where the nervous system has often been locked in a defensive pattern for years.

The session does not require you to believe anything in particular. It works through physiology, not philosophy.

Lipton's work was one of the things that first made me look more carefully at the relationship between stress, the nervous system, and physical illness. Whether or not you accept all of his conclusions, that question led me somewhere useful — and the tools I use now are grounded in that inquiry, not in any single author's framework.
